What would you get if you blended bluegrass, red dirt, redgrass, bluedirt, a litte bit of gospel, Flogging Molly, Hank III and lets say Animal on the drums? In Vinnys opinion, you would get The Dirty River Boys. And Vinny uses Animal as a drummer reference out of pure respect. Once you see the drummer for this band, you will understand. Energy, energy, and more energy. Talent, talent, and more talent. 6 adjectives Vinny came up with to describe this band. February 24th, 2012. The Dirty River Boys first headlining show at the Wormy Dog. Vinny was super excited to see these guys again, since he was blown away by them the first time he saw them back in December, opening for Bleu Edmondson. 90 minutes of pure greatness. These guys are the real deal. Vinny hasn’t felt this excited and positive about a band in this Oklahoma/Texas/Red Dirt scene since, well since seeing Cross Canadian Ragweed for the first time back in 2003 and Randy Rogers Band's debut back in 2004. That’s how high Vinny ranks the Dirty River Boys. Sure, theres a lot of good bands in this scene. Your Reckless Kelly, Your Jason Boland, Your Mike McClure Band, Your Chris Knight, and others as well as some of the newer products like the Turnpike Troubadours, Uncle Lucius, and The Damn Quails. Vinny is down with all those bands. But this band, The Dirty River Boys, out of Austin via El Paso. They got what Vinnys been aching for the past few years. The musicianship, stand up bass, mandolin, dobro, harmonica, dual acoustic guitars, snare, and the coolest of them all, the Cajon Box Drum. They trade off instruments during the show and don’t miss a beat. Everyone of these guys is badass. Everyone of them can sing. And sing well. The energy, the vocals, the harmonies, the sound these guys have is unmatched in this scene. They got it all. To be honest with you, Vinny was wondering if and when there would be another band in this scene that would peak his interest again. This band has done just that. This band is what Vinny likes to call Roadtrip worthy. Cross Canadian Ragweed was roadtrip worthy. To some extent, Randy Rogers was roadtrip worthy. Dirty River Boys are definitely roadtrip worthy. Their live show is an incredible 90 minute blend of bluegrass, a tad of gospel, some red dirtyish sound and even some Flogging Molly sounding tunes. To top it off, the stand up bass player throws in a couple Hank III diddies, All My Country Heroes and Mississippi Mud. If you know Vinny, then you know he is a huge III fan. It was pretty cool hearing them cover III let alone all the other songs they ripped out this evening. The crowd seemed to be really in to them and they seemed to appreciate the response they received from the crowd. This band captures Vinnys attention from the opening note to the last. Seriously, it’s been awhile since Vinnys been this high about a band in a long, long time. How serious is Vinny about this band? Well, they are making a new full length album this year. And to make that happen, they have asked their fans to help out in the cost of producing this album. So, via facebook and probably twitter they have set up an account where you can make a pledge to help them out thru Amazon. Its called kickstarter. A site that helps out bands in their position. From 1 dollar on up. Normally, Vinny is not about that kind of thing, but for this band, Vinny is doing it. As a matter of fact, he pledged X amount of dollars yesterday. Vinny figured he has spent thousands of dollars on everybody else over the years, so why not help these guys, a band he actually believes in, out with a pledge. Vinny hopes they reach their goal. The end of the pledge period is late April, so, if you got any left over from your tax return and feel like helping this band out, go to their facebook page or their webpage and see what its all about. They have a video on their page explaining it all. If that’s not your thing, thats cool too. Just please get out to a Dirty River Boys show near you and experience the greatness yourself. Vinny promises you wont be disappointed. Vinny is looking forward to their return. Have a nice Dirty River Boys Day.
