Mark McKinney Band
Vinny's been to the Wormy Dog probably near 150 times in the past 3 years or so. Every once in awhile there comes along a band that he's never heard of before that catches his ear and attention once they start playing. Randy Rogers Band was one of them a few years ago. You know the rest of the story with them. The Gourds were another one. And although Vinny was familiar with some South Austin Jug Band tunes before he heard them, Vinny was awed by their show. Micky & The Motorcars is another one. Well, add the Mark McKinney Band to this list. Wow. Vinny was totally impressed. It was a great surprise to get a band in here that didn't sound like every other band. The Mark McKinney Band had Vinny's attention from the very moment they hit the stage. Talk about performers. They are. Mark is a great front man. Full of energy and has rock star written all over him. The rest of the band was just as energetic as he was. It was a shot in the arm, and much needed in Vinny's opinion. During most of the set, there wasn't anyone in front of them on the floor, but by the end of the set, a group of folks gathered around. They got "it" too. Stumbling upon these guys was refreshing to be honest with you. And by the looks of all the people that made their way over to the merch area after the show, it looks like ALOT of people appreciated the show as much as Vinny did. Hopefully the word will get out about these guys. Vinny hopes they come back often. Check em out. Trust Vinny on this one.
Cody Canada (Apr. 17th)
So, Vinny got a call around 9pm on Sunday Apr. 15th. Spur of the moment show had been scheduled at the Wormy Dog for the 17th. Cody Canada acoustic. Well, hell... What was Vinny to do? Vinny knows alot of you out there are acoustic show fans. Depending on who it is, Vinny is too, but for the most part, he'd rather hear the full band stuff, and since most acoustic shows are during the week, Vinny has a hard time getting to those, BUT, since this was Mr. Canada, Vinny had to make an exception. Not knowing what kinda crowd was gonna show up, Vinny decided to show up early to snag a table. Got in around 7ish. Saw the familiar faces who make up the WD scene. Good seeing everyone come out on such short notice. The People were represented by Romy and Red..... Brian, Jerri, Alison, Butterball, Sean, Jenny, Bonsai, and a few hundred more made it a great nite to be out on a Tuesday. Anyways, show kicked off around 945. That was almost 2 buckets of Bud Light in already. The crowd was damn ready for a memorable nite. Knowing Vinny was gonna be there from 7 til who knows when, Vinny took some notes before the poison (Cody's Scotch) took affect later in the evening. From what he remembers, Cody played Turn Me Loose (Merle), F' Nashville, Brooklyn Kid, a Tom Petty song, I'll Think of You, I believe in everything, Leave Me Alone, Steppin Stone, Number, Needle and the Damage Done, 17, Flowers, then Cody took a break and then came back out with... Protest Song, In Oklahoma, Alabama, George Strait's Unwound, Back Around, Dimebag, Train to Birmingham, Jenny, and Sick and Tired.... Plus numerous others that Vinny can't recall. Jager Bombs were taking affect by then. Jeremy also sang Soul Agent and Randy sang Daddy's Home. All the Ragweed crew was there. Was good seeing them again. Been since NYE/HOB. Everyone seemed in a damn good mood that nite. They had some family members there as well, so that was cool that they could swing by OKC for an impromptu show like this and spend some time with them. So, remember what Vinny said earlier about acoustic shows? If they were all like this one, Vinny would be an acoustic show fan. Cody put it all out there for OKC. When he goes in to Back Around or The Needle..... it kinda puts a chill down the ol' Shark spine. It's that good. Anyone that was there will agree with VTS on this one. As far as Cody's Scotch went later on..... NOT GOOD RESULTS!!! Cody, Vinny's gonna have to take a pass on that #### next time. Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus!!!!!!!. That ain't right. Apparently Vinny heard the new CD on the bus, but he doesn't recall that at all. Thankfully, Osama Taxi Driver got Vinny home safe. NMS!!! No More Scotch!!!! All in all: Great Tuesday nite at the Wormy Dog. OKC is a good place to be. Have a nice Ragweed Day.
